Geography notes Longshore Drift Where waves approach the coastline at an angle, when they break their swash pushes beach material up the beach at the same angle. The backwash then drags the material down the beach perpendicular (at a 90º angle) to the shore, following the line of the steepest gradient. This produces a zig-zag movement of sediment along the beach known as longshore drift. Largest beach sediment is found updrift, and the smallest material, which is more easily moved, downdrift. ![]() Link for animation of long shore drift: http://oceanica.cofc.edu/An%20Educator'sl%20Guide%20to%20Folly%20Beach/guide/driftanimation.htm if you can't get to the website click the link in this page :) Wave Refraction and Coastal Defences For headlands and bays Formation of headlands and bays: The coastline consisted of parallel bands of hard and soft rock which were perpendicular to the sea. As a result of differential erosion, the bands of soft rock were eroded much more quickly than the bands of resistant rock to form BAYS ans HEADLANDS. The headlands will be eroded back as a result of wave refraction. Caves, arches, stacks, and stumps will form which will eventually erode away. The bays will advance as deposition will take place at their heads to form BAY-HEAD BEACHES. Eventually the coastline will become straight again and the whole process of differential erosion will resume again to result in an irregular coastline. For further information about caves, arches, stacks, stumps, refer to the useful link : All the best for the GG test tomorrow!!! :) ♥Christina To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. :) |
